FLASHBACKS

FLASHBACKS
(below in English)

juni 2019

English version:

FLASHBACKS
She is from one of those African countries where the different peoples decided that they can’t live anymore together in peace.
Torturing and sexual violence became there a frequently used weapon in war.
Every day we are confrontated with the effects of these atrocities in our Med’EqualiTeam medical clinic.

So also this beautiful African lady, sitting shy in front of me. Eyes without light in the pupils, her face without expression. With a flat, hardly understandably voice she tells her complaints.
She can speak english, what is a benefit, because you don’t need a translator.
Having terrible flashbacks, she can’t sleep and is depressive.
She gives the diagnosis herself. Of course, she is a nurse. Knowing what’s going on.
Carefully I ask what happened. Our instructions are to listen when a patient wants to tell his or her story, but not to insist for details. Beware of danger for retraumatising!
But the story, the truth has to be told to the world!
She comes from one of the pretended safe countries. We call her fortune-hunter.
She is alone, without relatives or friends.
In the country of origin they killed before her eyes her collegue. In addition she has been raped.
Enough reason for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, I think.
What can I do for her, is my first thought.
Sleeping pills, antidepressants, sedatives, we are not allowed to give them, apart from the fact if thats a rational choice.
Real psychological help is not available on Samos for the refugees.
The best option is the support group of MSF, but with a waiting time of several months.
Good advice is expensive, I decide to give her some anti-allergic pills with sleepiness as side-effect.
And I do some mindfulness-like breathing exercises with her hoping that she has benefit when flashbacks are intruding her.
I send her back to the jungle, back to the bad circumstances, the insecurity of the camp, back to her loneliness.
This feels absolutely as inadequate, but is the best I could do.

Meanwhile I hope that psychologists with PTSD-experience will come to this beautifull island, for instance with EMDR in their package. There is a lot of work to do.
